Why can I still hear with noise cancelling Sony headphones? ›

The sudden changes in pitch occur too frequently and make it difficult for any noise-cancelling audio device to analyse and process these differences. Therefore, you hear some noises whilst others are cancelled out.

Adjust the headset into a comfortable position. The noise canceling function is effective in low frequency ranges such as airplanes, trains, offices, near air-conditioning, and is not as effective for higher frequencies, such as human voices.

If there is too much space between your ear and the headphone earbud, the Noise Canceling function may not work as well as it should. Examine the earbuds starting with the bigger size tips to find the one that fits best. The best size earbud tip may be different for the left and right ears.

When you want to prioritize the sound quality, select the “Priority on sound quality”. If the connection is unstable, such as when producing only intermittent sound, select the “Priority on stable connection”.

The noise cancelling function primarily works for noise in the low-frequency band (train, aeroplane, engine noise). Although noise is reduced, it is not cancelled altogether. When you use the headset in a train or a car, noise may occur depending on environmental conditions.

Check whether Adaptive Audio is enabled. Adaptive Audio adjusts noise-control settings based on your surroundings. Clean the microphone and speaker meshes with a dry cotton swab. Sometimes Active Noise Cancellation can be affected if debris or earwax builds up.

The headset is not waterproof. If the headset is charged while it is wet with rain or sweat, etc., this can result in burnout or malfunction.

If you use the headset at a place where it is restricted to use Bluetooth devices such as on an airplane, you can use the headset as noise canceling headphones while the headset is connected to a device via the supplied headphone cable and the headset is turned on. The headset supports High-Resolution Audio playback.

Despite having very different designs, both the Sony WH-1000XM5 Wireless and the Sony WF-1000XM5 Truly Wireless feature class-leading noise cancellation technology that excels in blocking out ambient noise. However, the WH-1000XM5 are able to block out more sound across the frequency spectrum.

Air trapped between your audio device and eardrum

Noise-canceling technology can't completely isolate sound due to the air trapped between your audio device and the eardrum.

Press and hold the button for about 2 seconds when the headset is turned off to turn on the headset. You hear voice guidance “Power on”. The noise canceling function is turned on automatically when you turn on the headset. When the noise canceling function is turned on, the indicator (green) on the NC button lights up.
