WHAT IS WYOMING?

In 2019, Wyoming celebrated its 150th anniversary of making it legal in 1869 for women to vote, hold public office, own and inherit property, and be granted guardianship of minor children. Fast forward two decades, when a state constitution was being drafted as part of Wyoming Territory’s bid for statehood. The wisdom of continuing to permit women to vote as a possible obstacle to statehood was hotly debated but women’s voting rights were ultimately included in Wyoming’s state constitution. From WyomingHistory.org: In 1890, “There was substantial opposition, especially in the U.S. House of Representatives, to admitting a state whose women could vote. Congress finally passed the measure, however, with a close vote of 139-127 in the House and more comfortable 29-18 in the Senate. President Benjamin Harrison signed the statehood bill on July 10, 1890, admitting Wyoming as the 44th state and the first to guarantee universal suffrage. And in 1892, the women of Wyoming became the first to vote for president during a general election.”

Our list of States by Date of Admission and Who Was President shows that Wyoming was not the only state admitted to the Union during Benjamin Harrison’s presidency.

Mark thought it was Wisconsin. He lost half his score and finished with $2,000.

Kelly got it right. Her $3,000 brought her up to $14,600.

Stephen picked Colorado. He lost $10,601, landing him in third place with $1,999. That made Kelly Barry the new Jeopardy! champ. We’ll be seeing Stephen in the next Tournament of Champions and we’ll be seeing Kelly at the first podium next Monday.
