Air Fryer Baked Potatoes - Recipe Diaries (1)

Instead of using your oven to make a baked potato, you can use an air fryer. Usually, baked potatoes take at least an hr depending on the size of them. Both of these potatoes that I used were around 200 grams for each potato. That is 7 oz. It's easier to weigh potatoes in grams than ounces on the scale so I can track it easier in myfitnesspal. I set the air fryer to 390 degrees and let them cook for 30 to 40 minutes. The potatoes were perfectly cooked and flaky and I topped my baked potatoes with some taco fixings.

A potato has more potassium than a banana does!

The air fryer is one of my favorite kitchen appliances. Check out some of these recipes! Pillsbury Cinnamon Rolls in Air Fryer, Air Fryer Omelette, Air Fryer Poutine, or Air Fryer Turkey Breast!

Ingredients Needed

Air Fryer Baked Potatoes - Recipe Diaries (2)
  • Russet medium potatoes - I prefer either Russets or Idado potatoes for this.
  • Butter - Who doesn't like their baked potato topped with a tablespoon of butter? I sure do!
  • Salt and Pepper to taste
  • Cooking Spray such as Pam - this helps the potato skin get extra crispy if you like to eat the skin of the potato. I was told that is where all the fiber is.
  • Parsley is for garnish
  • See recipe card below for a full list of ingredients and measurements.

How to Make Air Fryer Baked Potatoes

Step 1: Set your air fryer to 400 degrees.

Step 2: Prick some holes in the potatoes with a fork and spray the potato with cooking spray. Place the potatoes in the air fryer basket and close it.

Step 3: Set the time for 35 minutes. After the 35 minutes is up, test the baked potato to see if it was done by checking how soft the potato is. If it is not ready yet, place the potato back in for 10 minutes longer. Of course, the time will vary depending on how large your potatoes are. I used a medium sized russet potato for this.

Note: Potatoesare readywhentheir internal temperature reaches 208 to 211° Fahrenheit.A fork easily pierces a baker when it's done. If the potato is hard, bake a little longer. However, watch out for over-baking, or drying of the underskin will occur.

Baked Potato Toppings

When I worked at an office, Thursdays would always be considered treat day and baked potatoes were popular to bring because you can keep them warm in the crockpot. The person in charge would always have different toppings to add to the top of the baked potato. Every week it was someone different so the same person didn't have to bring treats every day. We had a group of about 9 people doing this. I've made taco baked potatoes that are also good.

  • Gorgonzola and buffalo sauce, sour cream, green onions
  • Taco Baked Potato: Cooked ground taco beef, cheese, salsa, sour cream, Cottage cheese, chives, and freshly ground pepper
  • Loaded Baked Potato: Cheddar, sour cream, Homemade Ranch Dressing, and cooked crispy bacon
  • Leftover Instant Pot BBQ Chicken
  • Leftover Zero Point Turkey Chili
  • Make my Smoked Queso Dip or Smoked Salsa to add on top!

Tips for the best-Baked Potato!

  • Different-sized potatoes can have different cook times. If you find that your potato is not cooked threw after piercing a fork with it place it back in the air fryer for longer times. For even cooking times, keep the potatoes all the size if possible.
  • Make sure you poke holes in the potatoes. If you don’t do this the potato might explode and make a mess all over the air fryer!
  • How to know when a baked potato is done? Potatoes are ready when you can pierce them with a fork and the fork comes out clean!

FAQs

Is it faster to bake a potato in the oven or air fryer? ›

Less time: The baked potato made in the air fryer took less time than when baked in the oven. A 10-ounce potato took 40 to 45 minutes to get tender and crisp, whereas a potato baked in the oven took about 1 hour. Crisper skin: The skin of the air fryer baked potato became considerably crispier.

Can you put potatoes in aluminum foil in the air fryer? ›

Wrap each tightly in a piece of foil. Place potatoes in a single layer on tray in air-fryer basket. Cook until fork tender, 35-45 minutes, rotating halfway through.

Is it cheaper to bake potatoes in air fryer or oven? ›

In the air fryer, the potato took 35 minutes, using 0.55 kWh of electricity, costing 18.1p. So - allowing for small variations like how old your oven is, and how much energy it uses - cooking in an electric oven costs more than double what it costs to cook in an air fryer.

Can you put aluminum foil in an air fryer? ›

Foil is safe to use in an air fryer so long as you follow three basic rules: never let foil touch the heating element; make sure the foil is weighted so it doesn't blow around the basket; and avoid contact with acidic ingredients, which can cause the foil to leach onto your food.

How do you know when potatoes are done in an air fryer? ›

Spray each potato with a few spritzes of oil and season with 1/4 teaspoon salt. Arrange in the basket, and air fry 400F until a knife can easily be inserted into the center of each potato, about 35 to 40 minutes, turning halfway through cooking time.

How long does it take for a potato to get soft in the air fryer? ›

Preheat an air fryer to 400 degrees F (200 degrees C). Rub potatoes with olive oil and season with salt, pepper, garlic powder, and parsley. Place potatoes in the air fryer basket. Cook in the preheated air fryer until potatoes are soft, 40 to 50 minutes, depending on potato size.

Why should potatoes not be wrapped in aluminum foil? ›

Trapping that spud in aluminum foil where the moisture cannot escape results in a wet potato. Over baking the potato in foil cannot be seen (or easy to smell that it is overcooked) so you can end up with dark brown skin on the bottom, tough to eat and giving off a slightly burnt taste.

Can I use Airfryer without foil? ›

If you don't want to use tin foil, baking paper does the same job. Again, ensure you've cut it to size and weighed it down. You can also buy pre-made liners (£7.99,Amazon), which save having to cut the baking paper to fit each time.

What is 350 degrees in an air fryer? ›

The general rule of thumb is, you'll want to reduce the cooking temperature by about 25-30 degrees Fahrenheit (15-20 degrees Celsius) when using an air fryer. For example, if a recipe calls for baking at 350°F (175°C) in the oven, set your air fryer to around 320-325°F (160-165°C).

Why are potatoes soggy in the airfryer? ›

Firstly, if your potatoes are still wet before being placed into an air fryer, this can cause your potatoes not to crispen up. You can avoid this by thoroughly patting dry your potatoes before you place them in the air fryer. Secondly, you might be putting in too many potato chips so they aren't cooking evenly.

Are baked potatoes better in the microwave or air fryer? ›

The only downside to microwaved baked potatoes is that the skin is soft. This is where the air fryer comes in! Twenty minutes in the air fryer and you have the perfect baked potato.

What is the most economical way to bake potatoes? ›

It's super speedy, meaning you've got a baked potato in less than one eighth of the time it takes in an oven. Cooking in the microwave is one of the most energy- and cost-efficient ways to cook. The microwave really draws the seasoning on the exterior of the potato into the skin, giving it a delicious flavour.

Does an air fryer bake faster than an oven? ›

Air fryers cook faster than big ovens

Because of the smaller cooking chamber and superconvection (intense fan blowing heat into food), air fryers generally cook foods much faster than your traditional gas or electric stove. Often in about half the time it takes to make a similar recipe in a full oven.

Which way is faster to cook a potato? ›

Steam the potatoes instead of boiling

You're only waiting for a small amount of water to boil, not a whole pot. So the next time you're prepping potatoes for another dish or just softening them on their own, try steaming them instead of boiling.

How can I speed up baking a potato? ›

Adjust oven rack to middle position and heat oven to 400 degrees. Meanwhile rub potatoes with enough oil to coat and sprinkle generously with salt. Microwave on high power for 8 minutes while oven heats. Transfer potatoes to a rimmed baking sheet; bake until tender, about 30 minutes.

How much quicker than an oven is an air fryer? ›

Yes, an air fryer does cook faster than an oven – around 20% faster, to be precise. Air fryers also save time (and energy) due to the fact that, unlike an oven, they don't need to be preheated. Cooking speed is one of the greatest advantages offered by air fryers.
